Our mission
The SPIEZ LABORATORY is the Swiss centre of expertise for protection against nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) threats and hazards.
The SPIEZ LABORATORY develops and safeguards the necessary basic scientific and technological knowledge for comprehensive NBC protection. It also provides national and international organisations, the Swiss authorities and general population with services to prevent, to prepare for and to manage disasters and emergencies.
The SPIEZ LABORATORY makes an important contribution to peace building and to human and environmental safety.

- continually develops its nuclear and chemical protection expertise.
- has set the development of its biological protection expertise as a medium-term priority, in response to the rising risk of and the threat posed by biological weapons.
- adopts a strategy which is clear, coherent and comprehensible to the outside world.
- ensures the maximum possible safety of its staff, local residents and the environment.
- works to ensure that its staff closely identify with their work and the objectives of the organisation as a whole.
How do we achieve our objectives?
The SPIEZ LABORATORY
- makes an important contribution at the national and international level in relation to the implementation of the Swiss security policy strategy “Security through cooperation”.
- actively tracks and endeavours to anticipate developments in relation to NBC threats and hazards.
- fosters cooperation with selected partners, with the aim of expanding its existing specialist knowledge and expertise.
- regularly provides the public with information and updates on developments in relation to NBC hazards and threats, and on its own activities.
- adheres to federal regulatory policy by ensuring that it does not enter into direct competition with private firms.
- sets medium- and long-term objectives based on its operational planning which itself is based on the organisation’s annual objectives; the achievement of these objectives are subject to a yearly review.
- practices a quality policy which is based on international norms; many of its activities are already accredited.
- concludes long-term service agreements with important customers and partners. • maintains a high degree of flexibility to ensure a swift response to unforeseen events.
- continually validates measures needed to guarantee the safety of its staff, local residents and the environment.
- encourages close cooperation at management level and the empowerment of all its staff.
- actively promotes an open and collegial organisational culture.
