Nuclear issues
The Nuclear Issues Working Group deals with the technical and scientific aspects of military, terrorist and civilian nuclear and radiological threats and risks in all forms. Special priority is given to the following issues:
- Nuclear / radiological terrorism
- Nuclear proliferation
- Blackmail and sabotage
The Nuclear Issues Working Group makes its specialist knowledge and expertise available to a wide range of interested parties. For example, our work involves:
- Collaboration on basic documentation issued by the Confederation, such as the new "NBC Protection Concept for Switzerland"
- Carrying out national studies on behalf of the Swiss authorities in relation to blackmail/terrorist plots involving radioactive/fissile material
- Creation background information on the SPIEZ LABORATORY for the public
- Supporting fellow staff members within the laboratory, various DDPS services, the federal administration and more recently the private sector
- Support of the Swiss delegation to the Geneva Conference on Disarmament
Besides issues related to "traditional" military nuclear threats
- Nuclear weaponry and nuclear weapon technology
- Fissile material and the nuclear fuel cycle
- Nuclear arsenals and their delivery, doctrine and scenarios
- Weapon impact (phenomena, environmental aspects)
- Protection against the effects of nuclear weapon deployment
aspects such as feasibility, possible scenarios, measures and options in relation to nuclear terrorism and proliferation are also examined. Of particular interest are issues concerning the prevention and mitigation of the consequences of a possible terrorist attack.
Thanks to its specialist knowledge and expertise, the SPIEZ LABORATORY is in a position to offer advice, carry out surveys and conduct targeted studies with the aim of assisting the drafting of international treaties on disarmament, arms control and verification.
Fostering international relations and intensive exchanges of experience, for example with neighbouring countries, as well as NATO, PfP, NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty), CTBT (Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty) or FMCT (Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty), are an absolute must and are entirely in keeping with the "security through cooperation" principle which underpins Swiss security policy.
