Nuclear protection
Nuclear protection is concerned with providing protection against nuclear and radiological threats and risks. These activities are handled primarily by the Physics Section of the SPIEZ LABORATORY.
SPIEZ LABORATORY activities in relation to nuclear protection include:
- Examination of the technical and scientific aspects of the nuclear and radiological threat in all its forms and developments, in particular nuclear proliferation, nuclear terrorism and sabotage, as well as the provision of the relevant expertise and knowledge
- Examination of the effects of nuclear (and conventional) explosions
- Examination of the consequences of civilian nuclear accidents and disasters, especially the problem of nuclear radiation and radioactivity
- Running the special laboratory to determine the presence of radionuclides in environmental and food samples
- Participation in federal radioactivity monitoring
- Cooperation within the Emergency Organisation Radioactivity (EOR)
- Handling radiochemical/radioanalytical queries submitted by the NBC centre of expertise of the Swiss Army and the NBC Defence Laboratory 1, as well as assisting the NBC Defence Laboratory with its service provision
- Running the renowned national laboratory as part of the NATO/PfP programme on "Sampling and Identification of Radiological Agents"
- Supporting international organisations, particularly the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
