Organic chemistry

The Organic Chemistry Group specialises in the preparation of compounds relating to highly toxic chemicals. Our infrastructure and especially our Toxic Substances Laboratory allow us to offer safe synthesis of toxic compounds in laboratory-scale amounts, i.e. in gram quantities. Our main task is to synthesise, handle and study these products.
This area comprises the synthesis of highly toxic compounds, such as the chemical warfare agents themselves and the compounds related to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as well as the associated products such as their precursors, degradation products and by-products, but also the potential pharmaceuticals against these poisons (antidotes), or reagents for detection and simulation.
We provide these chemicals which are not available on the market for research, testing and training purposes. Since Switzerland has ratified the CWC, SPIEZ LABORATORY carries out only those activities authorised by the Treaty, namely protection, medical studies and pharmaceutical analyses.
- Chemical Weapons Convention obligations
As Switzerland has ratified the CWC, we fulfil the relating national and international requirements - High-tox laboratory and highly toxic compounds
For the safety of the environment and the involved staff, a state-of-the-art infrastructure and up-to-date procedures are available at SPIEZ LABORATORY to work with highly toxic compounds - Synthesis of reference chemicals
We are involved in the synthesis of highly pure compounds related to the chemical warfare agents - Supply of reference chemicals
We supply reference chemicals to laboratories of State Parties of the CWC - Evaluation of new trends on the preparation of compounds relating to chemical warfare agents
We investigate the new technologies for chemical production and we evaluate them for the preparation of highly toxic compounds
- Internship
Chemists can be trained for a three-month internship in organic chemistry at SPIEZ LABORATORY - Overview of our activities
