On June 25th, defense minister Ueli Maurer visited Spiez for the inauguration of the new Biosafety-level 4 laboratory. With this new lab, Switzerland closes a significant gap in the Swiss protection framework against biological threats, Maurer declared. In 2011, SPIEZ LABORATORY will be the first and only Swiss institution capable of comprehensively analyzing pathogens of the highest biological risk group.
